Sometimes you see a concept at the wrong time, when its too complex or beyond your physical capabilities. This doesn't mean you should give up on it, it just means you should file it away and hopefully revisit it at a later date.
The technique we went over today was familiar and falls into that vein. A while ago I was (and still am) having trouble passing my teammates guard. His body type is long, legs and arms combined with strength. All of which makes it difficult for me to pass as he uses his length well and if I pass that his De La Riva hook is his effective backup to regain control. If he doesn't use the DLR to reestablish distance, he keeps it in close and sweeps me either into mount or a back take. When this first started happening, I went to YouTube and looked up some things and tried to apply them. Unfortunately none of the concepts I tried did anything to stop him. I couldn't get beyond one or two parts of the concepts before getting confused and then getting swept.
Today however, things clicked. As soon as the technique was demonstrated, I immediately recognized how and when I could use it. It was literally like a curtain was pulled back and I could see the way. I'm actually looking forward to rolling with him and applying the lesson rather then trying to spin and back-step out of the position (which works some of the time but not effectively)
Other notes...I'm done with jury duty. It was a two week medical malpractice suit about colonoscopies, gallbladders and hemorrhoids. We jurors sides with the defense and cleared them of negligence. It's gonna be nice to get back in a normal rhythm now…
