Western Edition
Today was gorgeous, 80 degrees with a nice breeze. Kinda made me think of San Diego. After work I hit the gym for a quick lift and some cardio. Tonight I had some plans. I was heading out skating.
When I was younger I used to skate alot. I wasn't very good, probably because I was high most of the time, but I tried and always had my board with me. As I got older I kinda let it slide and forgot about it, caught up in other things and being an adult etc. A few months ago I picked up a Western Edition with some Thunders at the local shop. Yes I was shocked, Albany with a skate shop. There was one (that I can remember) back in the day but it went out of business.
Most of the old spots to skate were dead, I'd heard or witnessed. This past Saturday I took it upon myself to find a new spot with some promise, and I did. Smooth, long concrete, a nice set of two stairs with clean transitions on each side, some curbs of varying height to skate and grind on, with no cops. Funny thing is that most people wouldn't even notice it was there or appreciate the set up. Tonight I went out and skated it. It was a blast although I've a ton of rust to knock off. I managed to ollie up the stairs a couple times without busting my ass, hit a 50-50 on one curb (although I need some wax for next time) and generally fucked off for about an hour to an hour and a half. I was pretty glad my cardio at the gym today was light cuz this shit took alot out of me. I also gotta get some new kicks. Vans aren't made like they used to be.
The entire experience tonight was pretty therapeutic and I will definitely be out skating again soon. I've had alot of shit on my mind lately (mostly work related) and its been affecting my training. I feel I have been over thinking alot of the technique lately and that need to relax and just flow. I know my Jiu-Jitsu is solid, I have a good teacher. In the past 10 months training in the Gi I've picked up a ton of technique and broken some bad habits Just gotta remember to stay relaxed and focused. On a journey, small steps become leagues before you realize it.
